Akbar Ilahabadi felt aggrieved over the erosion of Eastern cultural heritage and values. This is a recurring theme in his poetry, and this article undertakes a critical review of his thoughts on the cultural loss that was taking place in the subcontinent. Using excerpts of his work on this issue, this article then compares and contrasts his thought process to the perspectives of other literary figures living in the same era.
Akbar Ilahabadi used his work to criticize the adoption of Western norms and values. He urged his people that adopting a foreign culture will deprive their future generations of a clear understanding of their cultural identity. Using the lens of Akbar Ilahabadi’s work, this article attempts to present the dilemma faced by the residents of the subcontinent between the adoption of Western culture and preserving their local culture during the British rule.
